Best Halloween Costumes for Dogs
Halloween is just around the corner, which means it’s time to think about Halloween costumes! And not just for yourself or the kiddos, but the pups too.
There are so many good ideas for Halloween costumes that showcase your dog’s unique personality. Some of them can be quite pricey. However, there are some solid options for low-budget Halloween costumes or to just use what you may have at home.
I’m not sure what Freddy and Leela will be yet this Halloween season. We are going with a Paw Patrol theme in our household, so that’s an easy one to dress pups as – especially if you have some of the breeds featured in the show (although it doesn’t mean your pup can’t be a breed he’s not; there’s no rules when it comes to Halloween costumes!).
With this in mind, we put together a list of the best Halloween costumes for dogs to check out.
Best Costume for the Entire Family: Prisoner + prison Guard
This is one that I did a few years ago with some dogs prior to Freddy and Leela, and it was a really fun one that brought some great laughs (and somehow, they all took on their own personalities in the costumes despite being in the same outfit).
The dogs dressed up as prisoners and the cat was the prison guard. It made me laugh because you know that in a house with dogs and cats, the cat is always the boss (even if the dogs don’t want you to think that).
You could modify this to get the entire family involved and have all the pets be prisoners (if you have more than one!) and the humans to be the prison guards.
Best Simple Dog Costume: Pumpkin
OK, what’s more classic than a pumpkin at Halloween?
Toddlers and babies always win the show when they rock a simple pumpkin costume, and it’s no different for your favorite canine friend. There are a few different options out there for a pumpkin costume. Depending on the size of your dog, you could even get an orange shirt, draw a jack-o-lantern face on it, and put it on your dog with a tie to keep it tight to their body.
If you prefer to buy one already to go, this dog pumpkin costume can be quite warm for your small dogs like Leela.

Best Character Dog Costume: Stitch
Disney recently released a new version of the fan-favorite Lilo & Stitch. Which means this quickly became a favorite choice for Halloween costumes!
Stitch is absolutely adorable and let’s face it; his personality may be the same as some of your furry friends. This makes it a perfect costume for your dog!
If you are looking for a trendy dog costume for this Halloween season, look no further than this adorable Stitch costume that fits for all dogs.

Best Halloween Costume for Small Dogs: Dinosaur
Dinosaurs never go out of style, especially when it comes to Halloween! This can be a fun one for the entire family, with a whole group of dinosaurs out together. The blow-up dinosaurs are a favorite for kids and adults alike, so it could be a nice complement to that.
For your favorite small dog, this dinosaur costume puts them in the holiday spirit and keeps them warm when a blustery Halloween comes blowing in. Plus, they have a few different options to choose from!

Best Halloween Costume for Large Dogs: Light-up Spider
OK, we are just slightly obsessed with this Halloween costume for your large dog. Featuring eight spooky legs layered with lights that actually work, it’s sure to steal the show this Halloween.
Whether you’re taking the family trick or treating or trying to spread some spooky spirit while handing out candy, this light-up spider dog Halloween costume will bring your dog some love. And, because it’s lightweight on their body, it means it shouldn’t bother them too much. Plus, you have a built-in flashlight once it gets a little darker – that’s always an added bonus when it’s spooky season!

Other cute Halloween costumes for dogs:
If you search the web, you’ll see a ton of different ideas come up for dogs – many of them inexpensive and not requiring a lot of work or money! Here are a few other ones that topped the list:
- Take some thick white or cream yarn and make a mess of it, topping it with Styrofoam balls painted brown. Your dog becomes spaghetti!
- Decorate your dog’s leftover cone from their latest surgery (or other incident). Cover it with red felt or cloth, stick some long painted cardboard rectangles behind it, and call it a side of fries.
- If you have a leftover white sheet, cut some holes in it for eyes and shorten it so your dog doesn’t trip. Then you have an easy ghost! (This is an easy one to use for an entire family, and for any size dog.)
- Grab a small witch hat and use some yarn or a soft headband to attach to their heads.
- Use existing clothing you may have for your dog. Got a winter parka? Turn them into a winter sports fan. Have some cute pajamas? Turn them into a sleeping dog. You can add accessories, too!
It’s always a good reminder to make sure you are dressing your dog in costumes that work for them and their temperament. Some dogs won’t mind a costume and will think it’s kind of fun; other dogs may hate it. Leave the haters alone and give them a good treat instead.
Sometimes Halloween can be a bit spooky and scary for dogs, too! There are lots of people on the street dressed in odd costumes, and it can be loud with sounds they don’t always hear. Keep this in mind! Sometimes it can be fun to just dress your dog up for the pictures instead of taking them out. You know best!
