Welcome to Freddy & Leela!
When a friend of mine posted a picture of a sad-eyed Great Pyrenees that she was fostering, I immediately messaged back “I’ll take him.” I think she likely thought that I was joking; but his eyes – those sad eyes of a puppy that has endured way too much in his short puppy life – told me that he was mine.
And so, I went through the process and adopted a four-month old Great Pyrenees whom I named Freddy. I knew of the breed through social media, and knew they were guardians – and very hairy and barky. All of that seemed manageable.
The part I underestimated? How much time it would take to build trust with a dog that had previously been dumped. It took months before Freddy wouldn’t run when I approached him; where he didn’t get that cornered look on his face when I entered the room. But then, it turned. And the trust and bond grew deeper. As it did, he started coming to me more. I saw his personality shine through (and my, what a goof!).
But, you know that feeling. The feeling that your little family isn’t complete, and I knew our family needed another pup to feel “complete.”
After searching on social media for several weeks, I came across a little white fluffball. Dubbed Olaf, he was a Havachon – a Bichon Frise and Havanese mix – from a breeder. The family who adopted him decided they wanted another dog instead, and the breeder wouldn’t take him back – and so he joined our family.
Olaf became Leela (yes, he’s a boy), and it felt like he’d been with our family forever from day one. And for Freddy? Well, he felt like he had a job as he had to take care of this little white fluff ball. They became fast friends and I only had a few moments where I doubted my decisions on having two puppies at the same time.
The vet thinks Leela was likely from a puppy mill, given an unexplained protruding bone on his side that was likely broken and healed improperly. While he built trust faster than Freddy, he did have some issues that we had to break through to get him to stop running away and not cower in the corner. (Although he still loves to run away, but because he’s also a certified goofball.)
And thus, our canine family is complete.
For several months, I’ve been debating about launching this blog. While I’m not a first-time dog mom, it has been quite the adventure with two puppies with such size and personality differences.
So join us on this blog, which is our corner of the world that showcases the life with a ginormous goof and a fun-loving ball of fluff.
